Swedish Women Stand Up for Topless Rights

Swedish women are fighting a new sexual revolution – the right to go topless at pools and beaches. They taking their tops off at public swimming pools in a protest against what they call gender-biased rules on swimwear. There was outrage from Swedish feminists after two women were asked by a lifeguard at a public pool near Stockholm to keep their breasts covered up.
About 40 women have joined the network called Bara Brost, or Bare Breasts, and staged topless protests in at least three cities. On of the women, 22-year-old Ragnhild Karlsson, said “If women are forced to wear a top, shouldn’t men also have to?”
Sanna Ferm, 22, one of the founders, said: “The purpose of the campaign is to start a debate about why women’s bodies are sexualised.”
She said the fact men but not women could be bare-chested in public pools was “a concrete example of how women have fewer rights than men”.
A spokeswoman for the group said women should feel comfortable taking their tops off wherever they went. “We want our breasts to be as normal and desexualised as men’s, so that we too can pull off our shirts at football matches.”
The campaign’s strategy has reportedly been a raging success, with members of Just Breasts jumping into swimming pools across the country wearing nothing more than bikini bottoms. This tactic has caused an upheaval in Swedish law – the country’s equal opportunities ombudsman will decide whether or not to take up the case later this month.
Reactions from other swimmers have ranged from support and encouragement to anger and even indifference, she said. The network was formed after two women swimming topless in a public pool in Uppsala, north of Stockholm, were asked to cover up or leave.

There’s a perfectly obvious reason, or perhaps two, why a woman’s chest is sexualised, and a man’s is not. No amount of feminist posturing is ever going to change that fact.
