“To answer the call of God is not to respond in service to Him but in relationship to and intimacy with Him,” said Collins. That’s why when God called her to preach, she was brought to I Corinthians 9:16, which later frightened her. The scripture says: “For if I preach the gospel, I have nothing to boast of, for necessity is laid upon me; yes, woe is me if I do not preach the gospel.”
She understood that God did not forget that she is a woman. She believes the word ‘necessity’ in the scripture simply means that preaching the gospel is not something one does because they believe they have an affinity for doing so or because someone appointed them, but “a divine compulsion brings forth the preaching”, explained Collins.
When we look at I Timothy 3:10, the passage which describes the qualifications for bishops and deacons, Paul actually included women in the passage. The use of the word ‘tis’ (Greek), which was used in the passage, actually refers to a neutral word that could mean both male and female. Paul should use ‘andron’ if he only refers it for male.
Charles Trombley in his book ‘Who Says Women Can’t Teach’ rejected the use of ‘wives’ when talking the passage of I Timothy 3:11. “According to some commentators, Paul gives additional requirements for the bishops’ and deacons’ wives. Since there isn’t a definite article in the sentence construction, nor is the possessive case used, this suggestion must be rejected,” stated Trombley preferring the use of ‘women’ instead of ‘wives’.
About the prohibition against women pastors which was issued by Southern Baptists in the year 2000, Collins said that she remain more sensitive to what was happening in that denomination than others. She also explained that what God after is not just the release of women but also men, whose gifting have been neutralized by the clergy-laity system.
Katherine Bushnell in her classic book ‘God’s Word to Women’ explained that originally, in the regular Tabernacle services, woman had her place either as a priestess or Levite. She again stated that there has been a mistranslating in the ancient version of Exodus 38:8 and I Samuel 2:22, that the word which should be translated as served was mistaken as ‘assembled’ or ‘prayed’ or ‘thronged’. The mistranslation is now conceded by Bible scholars.
Bushnell also stated that instead of the idea that women must ‘keep silence in the churches,’ in the Old Testament the bible says “Praise ye the Lord” about 100 times in the Psalms, which applies to both men and women.
In the end of the article Collins stated that the main point God wants us to do is not to ‘become Pastor’, but ‘to pastor or Pastoring’, that the gospel must be preached in demonstration of the Spirit and Power. And as Psalm 68:11 (NAS) says “The Lord gives the command; the women who proclaim the good tidings are a great host…” It becomes even more obvious that the most important thing in serving God is not ‘what we act as’, but ‘how we act ‘and ‘what the results of the action.’
