Once considered an unpopular activity among urban women, many of them now have shifted their preferences toward sewing; either as a hobby, or a professional subject. Some fashion crazed people who like to be different in style and do not like to be dictated, often opt for sewing their own clothes. Being able to sew is also one of the qualification someone must have in a tough, creative world of fashion designing. The credit, of course, also goes to popular show like “Project Runway.”
But what if you just wanted to start right now, while you had never operated a single sewing machine before ? Learn from Sam Mendoza, a professional Providence designer, who does not have a single professional training in sewing yet has been able to run several successful fashion runways that got many positive reviews. Sewing instructor Mikala Kash, who teaches sewing class at her studio in North Attleboro, kindly shared a couple of tips for you to start.
Invest wisely. Do not ever let yourself be tempted by fancy, expensive sewing machines. What you need is a real, direct experience that can make you really absorb the points of sewing. Fancy sewing machines will only hinder you from really try what works best for you. Remember, investing in sewing machines can cost you hundreds of dollars. It is better if you could take some sewing classes for beginners, to find out what you thought sewing would be is as enjoyable as you hoped.
Small is big. If you are a first-timer, do not think that you will suddenly be able to pop out with fancy cocktail dresses or summer gowns. To make yourself get absorbed into the activity without being overly frustrated, start with something small. Pillow case, cotton string bags or a tea cozy. If you can not find any sewing courses or classes nearby, there are still books and videos as it is a quite common subject.
