Getting curly hair for those who sport naturally straight hair is even more difficult than the other way around. We spend hours in front of the bathroom mirror and makeup table, only to get the fact that our hair becomes as frizzy as a clown’s, or fall after just one hour or two.
However, there is a way that you can try to get professional-looking curls. It might be a bit tricky for some, and it takes about 30 to 60 minutes, but you can hold on to the result.
First, you are going to need a curling iron, heat protecting spray, curl enhancing mousse or gel, and hairspray. Plus, you must wash your hair and apply curl enhancing cream or mousse before dry it completely afterwards.
The size barrel on your curling iron will make a big difference in the results. Smaller diameter curling irons create smaller curls. Larger curling irons create larger curls and waves. The length of your hair in relation to the size of the curling iron will make a big difference in the amount of curl you achieve as well. The more times you can wrap your hair around the barrel, the more curl you will achieve. Get the ceramic or tourmaline one for better heat distribution.
To make loose curls, clip all of your dried hair up except for a little section at the base of your neck. This will allow you to curl small sections, working your way up the head. Comb through each small section of hair, mist with a medium hold hair spray, and then wrap the hair around the barrel of a large curling iron (starting at the ends).
Hold the curl for 15-20 seconds, release the curl, and mist again with hairspray. Continue until your entire head is curled.
To make small, bouncy curls, the technique is the same as curling loose waves, but you use a smaller curling iron. Clip hair up except for the section you are working in. Smaller sections will create more curl.
Start at the base of the neck, comb through hair, mist with hairspray, and wrap the hair around the barrel of the curling iron. Hold each curl for 15-20 seconds, release, and mist again with hairspray. Style it by separating the curls with your fingers or a wide tooth comb.
Remember, always let your curls to cool down before styling them, but do not over-style them to make the curls last longer.
