The first day of school brings various degrees of conflicts, excitements, and emotions. But a school-aged child’s experience is completely different from an adult who is going through the same thing. There are some adaptation processes to go through, many of them related to regular time-table, test anxiety, financial and cognitive aspects, social aspect, and so on. Here are some tips that can make the process easier.
1. Look for financial support or extra facilities
Many adults who go back to school rely on financial supports such as scholarships. For your information, scholarships are not only for school-aged youths. Many scholarships are available to older students, working mothers, and other non-traditional students. You can also search for universities which have extra study hours such as in the evening, to accommodate older students who have to work.
2. Establish your study time, and stick with it
If you were a college student, you dedicated most of your time to study. But if you are an adult, you have days full of job matters, family matters, and such. Pick one time that is convenient for you to study, such as in the late evening or early morning, and stick with it.
3. Manage test anxiety
When the test is coming, anxiety usually takes hold, especially when you are no longer adapt your mental state to face a test. There are lots of ways to reduce test anxiety, such as making sure that you are well-prepared, arriving early to the class, breathing deeply, taking time to make sure that you are understand about the instruction, answering the easiest questions first, and trusting yourself. Dawnmarie Souza, a Connecticut woman was fired after posting a comment about her boss on Facebook. The emergency medical technician critized her supervisor on her personal Facebook page and then traded Facebook messages about the negative comments with other employees.
It was started when Souza’s supervisor asked her to prepare and investigative report when a customer complained about her work. She claimed she was denied representation by union, the Teamsters Local 443. At the end of the day, she logged onto her Facebook page from a home computer and wrote: “Looks like I’m getting some time off. Love how the company allows a 17 to be a supervisor.” A 17 – a code her company used – to refer a psychiatric patient. Surprisingly, her remarks drew supportive Facebook postings from other colleagues.
According to John Barr, an attorney representing the company, the real reason Souza was fired was because of two separate complaints about her ‘rude and discourteous service’ within a 10-day period. He said that she would have been fired whether the Facebook comments were made or not. Barr also said that the company understands that workers have right to talk about wages and working conditions, but it stands by its policy against employees discussing the company on the Internet, that their policy does not allow someone to make disgusting statements about co-workers. The title above can be very discouraging for women at those ages, but I must assure you not to worry because it is only something based on a certain research which I am quite positive, does not apply similarly in every part of the world. Instead of being discouraged, I think you must consider this as an alarm that women today must think and work smarter either you are in the mentioned range of age or not.
The study said that the reasons to such bankruptcy are divorce and the death of the spouse. According to Keith Stevens, an accountant of Wilkins Kennedy Accountancy Firm, after divorcement or the death of their husband, most women feel depressed for their changing of lifestyle. Stevens also said that they don’t want the children to feel the burden of financial problems especially, after facing the fact that their parents are separated.
The research shows, after 5 years of divorce, the men’s income are mostly raised by 25 percent. On the contrary to women, their income decreased by 9 percent. The reason to this might be caused by the fact that the men are no longer obliged to pay for their ex-wives needs, while divorce women must learn to stand on her own, after relying on the husband for certain period of time.
Especially for housewives, besides being jobless, at the middle-age most women have children who are still at school-age; the age where they still need full attention and care. Read more of Women at the Age of 35 to 54 Tend to Face Bankruptcy
Education for girls and women is the most highly leveraged investment now available for developing countries. And it has been believed that women’s education is a key driver for the economic growth of countries around the world. The fact has been raised since the US President, Barrack Obama in his speech in Cairo stated that a woman who denied an education is denying equality. He also said that countries where women are well-educated are far more likely to be prosperous. This must have raised the sights of millions of girls around the world to finally get the chance to learn.
One of the implementation of the President’s saying is the Moms Return to School Scholarship. With the economy downside condition, the idea of going back to school especially for moms seems to be a chance of preparation for them to be qualified workers, later on when the economy bounce back. The United States government seems to be very committed to helping all moms return to school. One of the first points of call for Obama when he became President, were the Federal Pell Grants.
The Federal Pell Grants are now giving above $5,000 grant for a single mom, and it is one of the best grants that moms in the US can currently get. Read more of Moms Return to School Scholarship by President Barrack Obama
Seeing the level of education the women undergo today, we must think that in career, they also possess various positions that once were only occupied by men. Have you ever questioned what kinds of career are mostly taken by females today? According to the United States department of Labor, the Leading Occupations of Employed Women for 2009 were secretaries, nurses, teachers, and cashiers. I was actually surprised by the finding, because I thought it could be something more like lawyers, marketing specialists, or finance managers, considering the technologies today and the things that called ‘women emancipation’ and feminism. Not that it’s something wrong or bad, but with the fact it seems like nothing much happened in the past 50 years for working women.
Frankly saying that the top 3 jobs for women I mentioned before are not the kind of jobs which usually considered to be high income generators. But it is obvious that women today are much more active role in their financial futures, as stated by Women and Co.,”Modern Women are taking the reins when it comes to earning, planning and investing our wealth.” And the statement seemed to be proved by a survey which said that:
-a generation ago 39% of women were knowledgeable about investing; today 82% of women are knowledgeable about investing.
-a generation ago, 24% of women had a financial adviser, today 57% have a financial advisor
-a generation ago, 53% of women set financial objectives, today 93% set financial objectives Read more of The Most Common Jobs for Women Today and Their Concerns of the Financial Futures
Since 1990’s era, skinny-looking models have been walking elegantly through the runways, drastically changed both people and modeling industry’s definition of “straight-size” and “plus-size” model’s standards.
Crystal Renn, a well-known plus-size model, is one of the panelist during the Glamour Women of the Year Convention at 92Y, along with her fellow model Paulina Porizkova. In the middle of forum, Porizkova suddenly interrupted Renn mid-sentence to get the audience’s attentions, and asked her to stand shoulder-to-shoulder beside her.
“I’m pretty much the same size now that I was in the eighties, when I was actually modeling, and I was known for doing bathing suits,” explained Porizkova, who is slightly larger than Renn at that time. After that, while she was pointing toward Renn and herself, Porizkova added, “Crystal is a plus-size model. I am a plus-size model. But this body was also an average-size model in 1980. Times have changed.”
Renn made some points that, among other things, expressed her wish to see much more diversity on the runways. She explained that, while there are extremities in modern modeling industries in which they have size 2s and zeros opposite to 14s and 16s, she would like people to see all the different sizes in a runway; from 2s to 4s, 6s, 12s, and 14s. That way, all will be about clothes instead of controversy about body sizes. Read more of Crystal Renn Commented About Size Diversity on the Runways
