Wall Street Journal has compiled a list of 50 women from across the world in its “The 50 Women to Watch” list for 2007 saying, “a new generation of women leaders who grew up watching pioneering women break into the executive suite has moved into the corner offices of some of the world’s largest companies.” It’s an annual ranking of women who Journal editors “believe have the potential to make a significant impact on business in the year ahead.”
The list is topped by America’s largest health insurer Well Point Inc’s president and CEO Angela Braly, followed by Pepsi Co Inc’s Chairperson and CEO Indra Nooyi at the 2nd rank and European Union Anti-Trust Chief Neelie Kroes.
Angela Braly, 46, became CEO of WellPoint on June 1, making the Indianapolis-based health insurer the largest U.S. corporation with a woman as its chief. Read more of “50 Women to Watch” List from Wall Street Journal

Author Doris Lessing on Thursday won the Nobel Literature Prize for her epic literary works that cover feminism, politics and her youth in Zimbabwe. The Nobel Prize jury describes her as “that epicist of the female experience, who with scepticism, fire and visionary power has subjected a divided civilisation to scrutiny”.
Lessing blazed the trail with her first novel, “The Grass is Singing” in 1950, chronicling the relationship between a white farmer’s wife and her black servant. In her earliest work she drew upon her childhood experiences in colonial Rhodesia to write about the clash of white and African cultures and racial injustice. She criticized the white colonialists for a sterile culture and for dispossessing native black citizens.
Before last night’s announcement, Lessing, 87, was not among 54 writers listed as being in the running by British betting agency Ladbrokes. Read more of Pioneering Feminist Doris Lessing Wins Nobel Prize for Literature
A study claims the declining teenage pregnancy rate in the US since 1990 is down to better use of improved contraceptive, such as condoms, use rather than young people abstaining from sex. The drop was noted in the United States between 1995 and 2002 and was not due to abstinence.
The researchers, from Columbia University and the Alan Guttmacher Institute, said their study casts doubt on federal funding of programs that promote abstinence until marriage without discussing contraception options. The data write that that abstinence accounted for only 14% of the fall in teenage pregnancies over the last decade, while 86% was due to better use of contraceptives and condoms. There was a 27% drop in the teenage pregnancy rate during the decade up to 2002. The study found that in 2002 sexually active teenagers had better use of contraceptive methods, including condoms and birth control pills than in 1995. Iranian Nobel Peace Prize winner Shirin Ebadi said on Saturday nations with nuclear capabilities should spend money to stop exploitation of women instead of making bombs. Iran may be toying with the idea of acquiring a nuclear weapon, but Nobel laureate Shirin Ebadi argues that the money needed for making an atom bomb can be used better for a more pressing need - ending prostitution and sexual trafficking of women.
Ms. Ebadi, who practises law in her country Iran where she “magically” escaped two assassination attempts, is particularly critical of the U.S.-sponsored “war on terrorism” and its effect on human rights. “Violence always brings violence.” “Have we found the roots of terrorism?” she asks. “The cost of making an atom bomb should be set against the cost of rescuing and rehabilitating girls and women trapped in prostitution,” said Ebadi Read more of Shirin Ebadi, Iranian Nobel Peace Prize Winner, Why Atom Bomb?

Sheik Taj Aldin Alhilali, the most controversial senior Muslim cleric in Western Australia has called on women not to leave their homes unaccompanied and insists sexual assaults happen only because “the man is provoked”. The man has caused outrage by suggesting, in a sermon, that women are responsible for sexual attacks because of how they dress and behave. Sheikh Taj Aldin Alhilali drew widespread condemnation for likening scantily clad women to uncovered meat eaten by animals in a sermon to 500 people last month. Sheik Hilaly’s reported comments, compared women who wore make-up and dressed immodestly to meat that attracted cats.
“If you take out uncovered meat and place it outside on the street, or in the garden or in the park, or in the backyard without a cover, and the cats come and eat it … whose fault is it, the cats or the uncovered meat?” Read more of Controversial Comments by Sheik Taj Aldin Alhilali on Women
