Now it is time for people with Down syndrome to show their talent in modeling. On World Down Syndrome Day, March 21, a modeling agency for those with Down syndrome was launched in Dublin. The agency, which is named “I’m Able 2 Model”, becomes the first modeling agency in the world who hired models with Down syndrome to pose for certain ads.
According to Sheila Campbell, the chief executive of the Down Syndrome Centre, the idea of this agency came in 2008 when the centre had their members participated in University College Dublin’s Fashion Week. In the event, the members of the centre came out and stepped on the catwalk, and the place just erupted.
Campbell later thought that the participations of young people in all shapes and sizes and even with Down syndrome on such events can benefit everyone. She then approached Jules Fallon of the First Option – one of Ireland’s leading modeling agencies, who later held a casting which resulted in an agency with 20 models, including children, teenagers and adults, on the books. Under the auspices of First Option, the agency was later operated independently.
About the project, Fallon said she did not hesitate in getting involved in the project. She also agreed that children with special needs such as Down syndrome have dreams and aspirations just like everyone else.
When asked why the models are not simply on First Option’s books rather than in a ‘special’ agency, Campbell explained that it had not occurred to her to integrated the models “This is about putting our foot forward,” said Campbell, “I’m not sure what to expect, but I hope it will mean ad agencies and the like will consider using our models alongside others.”
