In a press conference, Biotherm, a premium cosmetic brand from L’Oreal revealed the result of a research which is promising the skin repairment in order to make the skin look younger in just 4 weeks. The research by Biotherm which has been running for many years found the first cells of the living being on earth, called Thermal Plankton. If you have a chance to learn more about make-up, which part of your face you will wish to pay special attention to? Based on a small survey done by Gusnaldi, an Indonesian professional make-up artist, the answer to that question is always eye make-up. The survey was done, before Gusnaldi was announced as the new ambassador of Max Factor, a cosmetic brand from USA.

Gusnaldi saw many misinformation about make-up procedures lately in the society. According to him, with too many make-up products they need to carry in their bags, women will easily be confused by the needs of those tools. Then, with the small research he made via social network accounts, involving his clients, students, and friends, he drew a conclusion that what women need today is the correct application of eye make-up.

The result of the research shows about 40 percent of the respondents think that mascara is the basic need of their make-up. Applying lipstick is an easy thing, but Gusnaldi stated that applying mascara with the right way is not an easy task. The make-up artist, who has been engaged in the field for more than thirteen years, also said that eye make-up holds 25 percent of the total appearance of a woman.

Bank Negara Indonesia (BNI) discovered a phenomenon which occurred for the last for years, that the percentage of female entrepreneurship raised to more than 40 percent. BNI reported that from about 58,000 small businesses, 25 percent (about 12,000) are owned by women. The number has even been increased compared to the previous year.

“Several years earlier, the number of small business ran by women was less than 15 percent, today the number has raised to 25 percent,” explained Ayu Sari Wulandari, the Deputy Head of Small Business Division of BNI, in Women Entrepreneurship BNI-Femina event in Jakarta.

According to Ayu, there was another interesting phenomenon, that is: ‘women entrepreneurs have a lower number of NPL (Non Performing Loan), compared to male.’ Ayu added that women tend to come to the bank when they feel they are already established in business, this is also one of the reasons why businesswomen have lower NPLs.

A new study shows that about half of adolescents who recovered from major depression became depressed again within five years. But the study also found that girls were more likely to have another major depression. It surprised researchers because, as adults, women have not been considered more likely to have depression recurrence than men.

Previously, researchers found that those receiving the Prozac and cognitive therapy combination recovered faster from the first depression. That’s why, they expected those youths who received the therapy should be less prone to another depression. But although there was improvement after 36 weeks and complete recovery by two years, by five years, 47 percent patients suffered another major depression.

According to Dr. John Curry, a psychologist in the psychiatry department at the Duke University School of Medicine, there seem to be no treatment yet that really prevents depression recurrence, and that they have no indicator of how protected the person was against recurrence, while they were still in treatment. He also said that while girls are known to be more prone to initial depression, it was unclear why 57 percent of girls who recovered became depressed again, compared with 33 percent of boys. “Maybe it has to do with something in girls around the particular age that this is going on, stressful life events or the way people cope with stress,” said Dr. Curry. Shannon Tavarez, the eleven years old Broadway actress who played young Nala in the Tony-winning Broadway production of The Lion King, had died because of leukemia that she had fought over for six months. She had undergone a chemotherapy since last summer before she passed away. Before that, more than eight thousand people from across the country, including her Broadway cast fellows and famous rapper 50 Cent, had volunteered to be the bone marrow donors for her.

Sadly, none of theirs were matched due to Shannon ’s African-Hispanic blood, and thus made it harder to find perfect donor. In USA, according to the National Bone Marrow Program, minorities are underrepresented in the list of bone marrow registry. Only about seven percent of the list are African-Americans, while Hispanics are three percent and Asians are two percent.

Shannon had been playing Nala’s part for seven months when she finally realized that something went wrong. She felt extremely tired and had difficulties to walk, and started to feel flu-like symptoms. Her mother took her to the hospital, and she was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML), a blood and bone marrow cancer. According to a report released by the Washington-based Council of Graduate Schools, in the 2008-2009 academic year, women received over half of all doctorates, the number raised from 49 percent in 2007-2008 and 44 percent in 2000. The report represents more than 500 universities, not including professional degrees in law, business and medicine.

Nathan Bell, the council’s director of research and policy analysis said that the pipeline of women doctoral candidates was built since the 1980s, where they have received the majority of bachelor’s and master’s degree.

“Women are building on the gains of an earlier cohort of female scholars who were pioneers”, said Elizabeth Sutton, an assistant professor at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls. The lady who received her Ph.D. in art history in 2009 also said that they used to have more female mentors to look up to.

Based on the disciplines, women earned only 22 percent of degrees in engineering, and 27 percent of math and computer science doctorates. However, they represented 60 percent in the social and behavioral sciences, 67 percent in education and a full 70 percent of doctoral recipients in the health science – the field which showed the greatest one-year increase in applications overall.
